Fever in babies

A fever is a common symptom in babies and is usually a sign that the body is fighting off an infection or illness. It is important to monitor your baby's temperature and contact your baby's doctor if your baby has a fever. Your baby's doctor will be able to determine the cause of the fever and recommend the best course of treatment. The normal body temperature for a baby is typically between 36.4 and 38.0 degrees Celsius.

What should we do if baby has a fever?

IMPORTANT: the following are just suggestions as fever in babies might be due to different reasons. ASK YOUR DOCTOR FIRST.

  1. Measure your baby's temperature regularly. Use thermometer or thermoscan for baby as baby's temperature is slightly higher than adults. Recommend such as Braun Baby Thermoscan.
  2. Offer the baby plenty of fluids to help prevent dehydration.
  3. Dress the baby in lightweight, comfortable clothing to help regulate their body temperature.
  4. Use a cool, damp cloth or compress on the baby's forehead, neck, and armpits to help lower their body temperature.
  5. Give the baby a lukewarm bath or sponge bath to help cool them down.
  6. Avoid giving the baby medications without consulting a healthcare provider, as some medications may not be safe for young infants.
  7. If the baby's fever persists or they show other signs of illness, such as difficulty breathing or lethargy, contact their healthcare provider for further advice and guidance.

In most cases, a fever in a baby can be treated at home with rest, plenty of fluids, and medication to reduce the fever. It is important to never give a baby aspirin, as this can cause serious side effects. Always consult with your baby's doctor before giving your baby any medication.
