An inguinal hernia is a type of abdominal wall hernia that occurs when a part of the intestine protrudes through a weak point in the muscles of the lower abdomen, near the groin. Inguinal hernias are more common in baby boy than in girl and can occur at any age, although they are most common in infants and older adults.
Inguinal hernias can be either indirect or direct. Indirect inguinal hernias occur when the intestine protrudes through the internal inguinal ring, a natural opening in the lower abdomen through which the testicles descend in males. Direct inguinal hernias occur when the intestine protrudes through a weakness or tear in the abdominal wall muscles directly.
Inguinal hernias can cause symptoms such as a bulge in the groin or lower abdomen, discomfort or pain when lifting heavy objects or standing for long periods of time, and a feeling of heaviness in the groin. In some cases, the intestine may become trapped in the hernia (incarcerated), which can cause serious complications and requires immediate medical attention.
Inguinal hernias can be repaired with surgery, which is generally recommended if the hernia is causing symptoms or if there is a risk of incarceration.
