Sunglasses can be beneficial for babies in certain scenarios, particularly when they are exposed to direct and bright sunlight. UV radiation from the Sun can be harmful to the eyes, and babies' eyes are particularly sensitive to UV. Wearing sunglasses can help protect their eyes from damage in a certain way and reduce the risk of eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration later in life.
However, newborns under 6 months old should not recommended be exposed to direct sunlight for a long long time (> 4 hours), especially in the summer time, so if you're going to be outside with your baby during this time, it's best to keep them in the shade. After 6 months, it is recommended to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 for babies and make sure to have them wearing a hat and dress them in lightweight clothing that covers most of their skin.
Choosing sunglasses that are specifically designed for babies, as they will fit properly and provide adequate protection. These sunglasses should have lenses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays and have a snug fit so they don't fall off easily.
